The Fly by Katherine Mansfield and Disabled by Wilfred Owen Essay Example for Free
The Fly by Katherine Mansfield and Disabled by Wilfred Owen Essay Exploring the connections between memory and trauma in ââ¬Å"The Flyâ⬠by Katherine Mansfield and ââ¬Å"Disabledâ⬠by Wilfred Owen In these works ââ¬Å"The Flyâ⬠by Katherine Mansfield and ââ¬Å"Disabledâ⬠by Wilfred Owen both reflect on the relations with memory and trauma from the First World War. Mansfield shows her connection through a father who lost his son at war and struggles with reminiscing his sonââ¬â¢s death. Mansfield shows how the character starving for attention on the looks of his office to forget the painful damage the war has caused him. Owen writes his story from a soldierââ¬â¢s point of view that was in war and is now disabled from the war. The former soldier was unaware of what war actually was and only signed up because of the attention he got from others. Mansfield shows the terrifying memories of war coming from a family memberââ¬â¢s mental point of view: ââ¬Å"He did not draw old Woodifieldââ¬â¢s attention to the photograph over the table of a grave-looking boy in uniformâ⬠(425), the photograph above the table is of the bossââ¬â¢s son. Mansfield writes; ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËMy sonââ¬â¢ groaned the boss. But no tears came yetâ⬠(page 427), she shows the boss is struggling with memories of the death of his son. Owen presents his speaker as one who was in the war and faces trauma physically: ââ¬Å"He sat in a wheeled chairâ⬠¦.Legless, sewn short at elbowâ⬠(line 1-3), the former soldier lost his limbs at war. He loses the feeling of being with a woman: ââ¬Å"Now he will never feel again how slim girlsââ¬â¢ waists are,â⬠(11,12) he lost his sense of caressing a woman again. Mansfield shows her character in hunger for the attention of others, she writes: ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ve had it done up lately, he explained, as he explained for the past-how many?-weeksâ⬠(425) the boss craves the attention of others noticing his office and the fine details. When the boss repeats the phrase: ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËLook sharpââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (429), it shows that the character has high expectations for the people around him and for his sonââ¬â¢s return home from the war. Owens shows the speaker engaging the attention of others by signing up for war not knowing the possible outcomes: â⬠Å"He thought heââ¬â¢d better join. He wonders whyâ⬠¦.Aye, that was it, to please the giddy jilts [unpredictable women]â⬠(24-27), he signs up only to get the attention from others especially women. Owen writes: ââ¬Å"Some cheered him home, but not as crowds cheer Goalâ⬠(37) the attention the speaker had got when he first signed up was not the attention he had gotten anymore. Both characters are now left with permanent damage from the war, Mansfield shows that the character is more mentally damaged from the war with loss of his son: ââ¬Å"Six years ago, six yearsâ⬠¦. How quickly time passed!â⬠(428), the war has robbed his son from him. When the boss is tormenting the fly with his ink: ââ¬Å"The last blot fell on the soaked blotting-paper, and the draggled fly lay in it and did not stirâ⬠(429), he is reminded the constant struggle in remembering the death of his son. The speaker in Owens poem is not only left with constant memories of the war but also left with physical damage too: ââ¬Å"There was an artist silly for his face, For it was younger than his youth, last year. Now he is old; his back will never brace; Heââ¬â¢s lost his color very far from hereâ⬠(14-17) the war stole his baby face looks and replaced him with a face that was trampled by war. In these works the writers have different views of the war. Mansfieldââ¬â¢s story is presented from family members view and how the war affected his mental view. He is struggling with himself in remembrance of his sonââ¬â¢s death so he craves the attention of others but is still reminded what the war has robbed him of. Owenââ¬â¢s writes his story more in first person; his character was ignorant about war and signed up to get the attention of others. The speaker is now left with mental and physical damage from the war. Each works provide insight on how cruel war is by the views the writers present them in. Promotions A Communication Link Between Buyers And Sellers Marketing Essay
Promotions A Communication Link Between Buyers And Sellers Marketing Essay The term Promotion and Sales are totally interdependent on each other. Promotion is a communication link between buyers and sellers. It is a function of informing, persuading, and influencing a consumers purchase decision. Promotional activities include: media advertising, direct mail, personal selling, sales promotion and public relations. A sale consists of marketing activities other than personal selling, advertising and public relations that stimulate consumer purchasing and dealer effectiveness. Sales promotion is a subset of promotion. In other words, sales promotion is not the same thing as promotion. Promotion is a much broader term. The Promotional mix works like a subset of the marketing mix, with its product, distribution, promotion, and pricing elements. With the promotional mix, the marketers attempt to create an optimal blend of various elements to achieve promotional objectives. The promotional mix requires a carefully designed blend of variables to satisfy the needs of a companys customers and achieve organizational objectives. I. Personal Selling :- is the oldest form of promotion. It is conducted on a person-to-person basis with the buyer. It involves the search for new prospects and follow up service after the sale. It is mainly face to face presentation and promotions of goods and services. Its more accurately described today as helping others satisfy their wants and needs. This direct form of promotion may be conducted: Public Relations and Publicity:- Public relations refer to a firms communications and relationships with its various publics. These publics include customers, suppliers, stockholders, employees, the government, the general public, and the society in which the organization operates. It is the management function that evaluates public attitudes and procedures in response to public request. Publicity is the marketing-oriented aspect of public relations. It can be defined as non personal stimulation of demand for a good, service, person, cause, or organization through unpaid placement of significant news about it in a published medium or through a favorable presentation of it on the radio, television, or stage. Of course, bad publicity can damage a companys reputation and diminish brand equity. Advertising has gone through five major stages of development: domestic, export, international, multi-national, and global. For global advertisers, there are four, potentially competing, business objectives that must be balanced when developing worldwide advertising: building a brand while speaking with one voice, developing economies of scale in the creative process, maximizing local effectiveness of ads, and increasing the companys speed of implementation. Born from the evolutionary stages of global marketing are the three primary and fundamentally different approaches to the development of global advertising executions: exporting executions, producing local executions, and importing ideas that travel.[24] Advertising research is key to determining the success of an ad in any country or region. The ability to identify which elements and/or moments of an ad that contributes to its success is how economies of scale are maximized. Once one knows what works in an ad, that idea or ideas can be imported by any other market. Market research measures, such as Flow of Attention, Flow of Emotion and branding moments provide insight into what is working in an ad in any country or region because the measures are based on the visual, not verbal, elements of the ad. The first step is of prospecting. Prospecting involves researching potential buyers and choosing those most likely to buy. That selection process is called qualifying. To qualify people means to make sure that they have need for product, the authority to buy and the willingness to listen to a sales message. A person who meets these criteria is called a prospect. In this approach you must learn as much as possible about customers and their wants and needs. In this gathering the information before you approach the customer is critical. As we said an example of CRM selling you would know which people are likely to buy or use it. In this the main idea is to give an impression of friendly professionalism, to create rapport,, to build credibility, and to start a relationship. Often the decision of whether to use a software package depends on reliable service from the salesperson. In the actual presentation of the CRM software, the idea is to match the benefits of your value package to the clients needs. Various companies provide sales proposal software that include everything from power point presentations to competitive analysis. During the presentation is a great time to use testimonal to The selling process isnt over until the order is approved and the customers is happy. The sales relationship may continue for years as you respond to new request for information. Salesperson realy needs to be providers of solutions to their customers and also needs to think about happen after the sale. The follow up step includes handling customers complaints ,making sure the customers questions are answered and quickly supplying what the customers wants. Steps involved in setting up a public relations programme Public relations refer to a firms communications and relationships with its various publics. Public Relations has three steps:- Listen to the public: Public relation start with good marketing research. Change Policies and procedures : Businesses dont earn understanding by bombarding the public with propaganda, they earn understanding by having programs and policies and practices in their public interest . Inform people that youre being responsive to their needs: Its not enough to simply have programs in the public interest. You have to tell the public about those programs so that they know youre being responsive Public relations has more power to influence consumers because the message comes from source that is perceived as being more trustworthy. Advantages of Publicity: Creates a positive attitude toward a product or company Enhances credibility of a product or company Disadvantages of Publicity: May not permit accurate measurement of effect on sales Involves much effort directed toward non-marketing-oriented goals 5.Promotional techniques used to reach customers There are several Promotional techniques that encourage/stimulate customers to patronize a specific retail store or to try a specific product. These promotional techniques give various benefits/bonuses to customers and these are mainly classified as 1.Coupons: This is the most common technique which usually reduce the purchase price or offered as cash. Need to state the offer clearly and make it easy to recognize. 2. HandoutAwash in Coupons Looks at the volume of coupons (323 bn) and the poor redemption rate (less than 3%). Looks at more innovative media to deliver coupons (currently over 80% are delivered via the Sunday paper).in store by the products, as customers exit the store based on purchasesdiscussed delivering coupons to customers as they enter the store, using a card that swipes to indicate past purchases. Past buying behavior is the best predictor of future buying patterns Users only redeem coupons they would ordinarily purchase. 75% of the coupons are redeemed by consumers who would buy the brand already. . 3 Demonstrations: Excellent attention getters. Labor costs are usually high. 4. Frequent User Incentives: Major airlines, helps foster customer loyalty to a specific company. Credit card companies. Trading stamps-Co-ops back in England, foster retail loyalty. 5. Point of Purchase Display: Outside signs, window displays, counter pieces, display racks. 90% of retailers believe that point of purchase materials sell products. Essential for product introductions. Also with 2/3 of purchasing decisions made in the store, they are important. 6. Free Samples: Stimulate trial of product. Increase sales volume at the early stage of the product life cycle and obtain desirable distribution .Most expensive sales promotion technique. Not appropriate for mature products and slow turnover products. 7. Money Refunds/Rebates: Submit proof of purchase and mail specific refund, usually need multiple purchase for refund. Helps promote trial use, due to the complexity of the refund, it has little impact. Customers have a poor perception of rebate offered products. Used extensively in the Auto and Computer industry. 8. Premium Items: Offered free or at minimum cost as a bonus. Used to attract competitors customers,different sizes of established products. McDonalds Last summer the following tie-in premium programs. Casper with Pepsi, Pizza Hut, Choice Hotels Congo with Taco Bell Batman Forever with McDonalds, Kelloggs , Six Flags, Sears Pocahontas with Chrysler, Nestle, General Mills, Burger King Mighty Morphin with McDonalds Cents-off Offer: Strong incentive for trying a product-very similar to coupons, but are a part of the package. Consumer Contests and Sweepstakes: Consumers compete based on their analytical or creative skills. Must be accurate or you will anger customers/retailers. Sweepstakes are prohibited in some states. Conclusion From the above discussion of various Promotion and sales technique we conclude that promotion with advertising is a part of total system approach that lead to maketing principles. Promotion and sales are interdependent on each other. It helps to increase demand for the product with a view to increase the companys sale and profit.

BEETHOVEN :: essays research papers
Ludwig Van Beethoven Born to a drunkard father and an unhappy mother, the young Beethoven was subjected to a brutal training in music at the hands of his father, who hoped that the boy would prove to be another prodigy like Mozart. Failing in this, the young Beethoven nevertheless embraced music and studied for a short time in 1792 with Franz Joseph Haydn in Vienna. Hailed as a genius and a master of improvisation at the piano, Beethoven soon made a name for himself, and by 1794 was known throughout Europe. He faithfully learned the Classical Viennese styles and traditions in music, and then proceeded throughout his career to completely revolutionize them. His earliest compositions reflect the classical restraint of Haydn and Mozart, yet there were always flashes of what was to come. The emotion he displayed while playing his own music was unheard of in his day, and the fiery intensity of his early Piano Sonata in C minor, known as the "Pathetique" is one of the first works in which Beethoven g ives vent to his own dramatic musical voice. By 1800, Beethoven had become aware of his advancing deafness -- surely a most horrible fate for a musician and unendurable to a composer. Agonizing over his fate, Beethoven contemplated suicide, but in the end embraced life, determined to go on composing, if no longer performing. Unhappy with his compositions up to that time and stating that he would now be "making a fresh start," Beethoven began composing music such as had never before been heard. His Symphony no. 3 in E-flat major, subtitle the "Eroica", was completed in 1804, and was almost twice as long as any symphony written up to that time. Taking the classical symphony as a starting point, it introduces more themes, more contrasts, more instruments, more weight and more drama than previously heard in the symphonic form. His sixteen string quartets span his creative life and developed from the classical restraint of the six "Early" quartets to the sublime late quartets which contain music of such personal pain and suffering, that one wonders if an audience was intended to hear them at all. The power of Beethoven's voice can be heard in the String Quartet no. 11 in F minor. Beethoven's musical ideas, the "themes" he used and from which he painstakingly constructed his works, were revolutionary for his day. The well-known opening motto theme of the famous Symphony no.

Pride and the Prejudice Essay example -- Literary Analysis, Jane Aust
ââ¬Å"The power of doing anything with quickness is always prized much by the possessor, and often without any attention to the imperfection of the performance.â⬠(1) Said Mr Darcy. This is one of the world's most popular novels, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice has charmed readers since its publication of the story of the amusing Elizabeth Bennet and her relationship with the aristocrat Fitzwilliam Darcy. During this essay it will explore the construction of characters, in particular it will be Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy also exploring the social situation in which the characters operate and exploring the cultural context (Victorian England). The position of the writer Jane Austen, I find she is trying to say that power is an effect of social structure and not an absolute force imposed on it, nobody is completely powerful or powerless also that power is an effect of unequal relations between people that society recognises as people belonging to certain groups e.g. gender, sexuality, age or profession. Power is related to class and class is related to reputation. The lines of class are strictly drawn. While the Bennettââ¬â¢s, who are upper middle class, they may socialize with the upper-class people like Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy. The main discourse of power represented in this book is Wealth, Class, Family, Marriage and Gender. These are all significant in this book because Pride and the prejudice was written in the 18 - 19th century, (the classic English society), ââ¬Å"where in the rural England it was dominated economically and socially by the landowners whose vast estates were the core of rural lifeâ⬠(2), oth er being men. When females where only meant to maintain there own social and finical reputation by getting married ... ...but the most major would have to be power. This essay explored the construction of characters in the novel most in particular Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy it demonstrated who is powered and disempowered on many different levels of this novel. Although this book is inviting to all readers even if the writing techniques are much different then the language these days it is the reader. In the end the novel it is completely evident that there is power and disempowerment through out the whole book, even if you do not notice it. Althrough the Darcy-Elizabeth and Bingley-Jane marriages, Austen shows the power of love and happiness to overcome class boundaries and prejudices (power). ââ¬Å"In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.â⬠(1) Said Mr. Darcy to Elizabeth.
Drama piece using different extracts from other plays and social :: Drama
Drama piece using different extracts from other plays and social references from television programmes Drama essay one part two In our drama piece we are using different extract from other plays and social references from television programmes. We have also used song lyrics, which fitted the mood and context of the piece to inspire us and add to the drama. The portrayal in books and film has helped us to build up our characters and to see the reactions from the different times in which book like 'The cement garden' and films such as 'Girl, interrupted' are set. We used an extract of Macbeth's which we adapted to fit the performance using Lady Macbeth and the doctors lines, symbolising the problems as well as the cure all represented within one character shows the personality of the character, ie that she is self-aware, and tries to solve her own problems. The style and way it is performed as well as the difference in language makes it easily recognisable as Shakespeare, the genre is similar, with murder and influencing characters such as the Witches or our masked characters. Both Macbeth and our performance have an influential lead female, and also the male lead who is very confused with conflicting feelings. The times are very different; ours is modern whilst Macbeth is Shakespearian, written at the time of James I and was based on real characters, whilst ours is fictional. In Shakespearean times, Lady Macbeth would be washing her hands like our female character and may even be washing her hands in blood, this would all be on stage as Shakespeare likes the audience to see everything. Lady Macbeth is a very unstable character, similar to our female lead, and the washing of hands is a classic sign of mental instability. In The Crucible the style is quite different to our piece as there are much more main characters in The Crucible, but also similar because of the two female and one male relationship in both pieces. The Brother in our piece is similar to John Proctor, as they both have two love interests and choose the 'right' person. The Crucible is also set in early America, very different to our modern piece. The cultures at the time of The Crucible portray stereotypical views of young women and relationships and would look down on anything different. This is displayed within our performance with the brother being ashamed of himself for loving his sister; Proctor is also ashamed of his feelings for Abigail. We used songs with lyrics that fitted the mood and context of the scene and looked at the way incest is portrayed on television.

Compare/Contrast: Two Competing Firms Essay
We all know and understand the importance of good marketing, advertising and promotion of a companyââ¬â¢s goods or services. Many modern business organizations spend thousands of dollars from their budgets for various advertising campaigns, promotional materials and publicity in order to attract more customers, look trustworthy, and eventually receive more profits. I could experience how this strategy works and how it fails to work in such service sector as tourism, and this report is a summary of my research. This summer my brother and I wanted to take a trip to the West Rim of the Great Canyon, so we decided to use the services of ââ¬Å"Travel Guideâ⬠, one of the most known tour agencies in my city, which is continually advertised in local media. Its office was very busy, and we were treated there as usual clients who are not ordering a luxury tour. During the trip we had many little problems, because it included a lot of challenging activities, like rafting or a mule ride. My brother damaged his back, and we had to wait for medical help for several hours. Unfortunately, the trip was not too well-organized and quite disappointing. In December I got a chance to go to Aspen to ski with my friend, who recommended me to use the services of another tour provider, ââ¬Å"Telehausâ⬠. It is a small private agency which works without massive advertising and expands its client database at the expense of own good reputation. We were overwhelmed with the attitude and attention we had received in ââ¬Å"Telehausâ⬠. We were provided with everything needed for the trip, including special maps and ââ¬Å"Tips for safe skiingâ⬠. The trip was great, and we had a very competent mountain travel specialist, who really helped us a lot and was always available in case of any trouble. Therefore, the most important difference between these two companies was the quality of their services. During our trip to the Grand Canyon, there was always some disarrangement and scheduling problems, therefore, many times we had to wait here and there. ââ¬Å"Telehausâ⬠had much better organization of the tour and we were very happy with the hotel services, as well as with the entertainment program. That is why I rated ââ¬Å"Travel Guideâ⬠services as 45/100 and ââ¬Å"Telehausâ⬠services as 95/100. Another important difference was the quality of their work with the clients, especially during the reception in the agencies. We were just routine customers in the office of ââ¬Å"Travel Guideâ⬠, but in ââ¬Å"Telehausâ⬠we felt ourselves special and appreciated. ââ¬Å"Telehausâ⬠employees were more cooperative and professional when helping us to select a hotel, and their work is organized better and more effectively, then the work of ââ¬Å"Travel Guideâ⬠. Nevertheless, I have to mention a number of some small differences, which made me give 95/100 to ââ¬Å"Telehausâ⬠. The first one is the variety of the tours they offer. As I could learn from the booklets of ââ¬Å"Travel Guideâ⬠, they can arrange a trip to almost every nook of the world including exotic islands, etc. But ââ¬Å"Telehausâ⬠works with a limited number of tour-operators. Besides, ââ¬Å"Telehausâ⬠can offer mostly quite expensive hotels or apartments, which makes their services unavailable for the customers who have low budgets for traveling. Finally, one more principal difference is the approaches of these two companies to their services, related to advertising and marketing. ââ¬Å"Travel Guideâ⬠is a well-promoted and well-advertised brand name in the market, which has great professional connections, considerable number of clients and good profits. However, ââ¬Å"Telehausâ⬠does not spend its resources on advertising, but tries to attract new customers with the help of good reputation, high-quality services and competence of the employees. What I have learnt from my experience is that excessive advertising is not everything. In order to make a company successful, it is absolutely necessary to combine a number of various effective strategies helping to boost the business and maximize the incomes. Those strategies must include well-planned marketing and advertising campaigns, proper organization of the work, selection of qualified, skilled and responsible employees, working on some innovative ideas, and many others.

Caso Camry Essay
1) There are three types of reference group influence ââ¬â informational, normative, and identification. Assuming Bianca is a representative for the group consisting of successful, urban, professional African American women, which type(s) of group influence do you see operating in this campaign? Informational influence is a potential since a member of the target group is implicitly saying, ââ¬Å"You are like me and I like this car, so you will tooâ⬠. Normative influence is not really being utilized in this campaign. There is no threat of punishment or promise of a reward by the group for compliance (buying the Camry) Identification influence is likely the strongest influence being utilized. The goal here is to have the target market identify and internalize group values and beliefs and then act on them. The implicit belief is that Camry is part of an active, adventurous, urban lifestyle. Notice the strategy of showing a member of the target group using the automobile which is consistent with an identification influence strategy 2) What are the primary core American values that this campaign is attempting to tap into Active (rather than passive) ââ¬â the excitement and adventure aspect of the espionage theme, along with the ââ¬Å"on-the-goâ⬠professional woman. Change ââ¬â this campaign is based on the reality of existing females and African-American professionals as role models, not stereotypes. Individual ââ¬â this campaign revolves around Bianca and her individual accomplishments. Diversity ââ¬â this campaign is reaching out to African American professional women and indicating their desire to be their car of choice. Youth ââ¬â this campaign is clearly targeting a youth audience ââ¬â Bianca is a young urban professional. 3) What values and aspirations does this campaign tap into relating to the sub-groups of professional women and professional African American women? This campaign taps into both professional women and African American women ââ¬â values and aspirations relating to modern gender roles and upward mobility and status for women and blacks and so on. 4) In Chapter 5, we describe 11 African American market segmentsà identified by Yankelovich. Which group or groups do you think the target market of professional African American women best represents? Explain. Answers will vary here and there is no perfect match. The closest would be the female members of the Black Onliners followed by the female members of the New Middle Class. Black Onliners come close in that they fit the age and income demographics and are tech savvy and brand conscious, which fits the description of the target professional African American women, and fits the featured aspects of the car and the Interactive nature of the campaign. While this group trends male, the female members of this group could be targeted. This group is described in the text as follows: Black Onliners (7 percent) ââ¬â Younger (18-34), male, middle/upper income, brand conscious, place strongest importance on being around people of own ethnicity, most stressed about work, family, academics, and straddling black and white worlds, heaviest users of such technology as blogs and IM.
